Westerner Park Urban Farm initiative brings together urban and rural communities through education on food production and preservation.
The first component of our Urban Farm initiative is the planting of our urban garden on Westerner Park’s property near the Race Track. With the help of staff and volunteers the garden was planted with everything from potatoes to multi-coloured carrots, and edible flowers. The produced from the garden are then used at our Long Table Dinner event and the rest donated to local community organizations like the Red Deer Food Bank and Hope Mission.
The second part of our Urban Farm initiative is the Festival. The festival is a full day of activities, workshops and demonstrations on food production and preservation. Local vendors and producers showcase and sell their homemade, handcrafted, and natural products. Alongside the tradeshow, and free workshops is a petting zoo, face painting and more!
The third Urban Farm event is the Taste of Home Long Table Dinner. A local chief is selected to source ingredients locally and expertly craft them into a flavourful experience for the evening’s dinner. Each course features a different product from a local producer and different liquor samples provided.
Let's come together, learn to grow local food and connect with the community at Westerner Park Urban Farm Festival on May 12!
