March 10, 2020 | Red Deer, AB – For the fourth year in a row Westerner Park has been awarded $20,000 funding through the Community Champions Program. The program is an infrastructure grant program that is specially designed for not-for profit organizations and municipalities in Alberta. The program provides funding for specialized recycling bins (indoor and outdoor) that make out-of-home opportunities for recycling more convenient for and accessible to the public.

In an average year Westerner Park recycles over 150,000 beverage containers under 1 litre and 4,500 beverage containers over 1 litre with their recycle bins through the support of the bins provided by Community Champions grant.

“We have an obligation to be deliberate stewards to our city and environment.” says Abby Wallin, Event Delivery Manager. “It is important we do everything we can to ensure all beverage containers do not end up in the landfill. Our organization is excited to again receive the Community Champions grant to help us continue to better serve our community and environment.”

As a not-for-profit organization and agricultural society, Westerner Park invests all of their earnings back into the improvement of their buildings, grounds and amenities.

This year Westerner Park will host the World Juniors and are expecting over 6,700 visitors to walk through the doors of the Westerner Park Centrium for each of the 16 games. The new recycle bins purchased through the grant will be located in the Centirum in areas where food and beverage are served. This will provide the opportunity for guests to recycle their containers easily.
